அகல்யாபாய்
(1725-1785)
இந்தியாவில் பிரிட்டிஷ் ஆதிக்கத்தை எதிர்த்து தனது இறுதி மூச்சு உள்ளவரை உறுதியாக எதிர்த்துப் போராடிய முதல் அரசி அகல்யாபாய் ஆவார். மகாராஷ்டிராவில் உள்ள பத்ராடியில் 1725ல் பிறந்தார். அவரது தந்தை மங்கோஜி சிந்தியா ஒரு விவசாயி ஆவார். அகல்யாபாயின் தோற்றம் கவர்ச்சியானதாக இருக்காது. என்றபோதிலும் மகாராஜா மல்ஹாராவ் கோல்கர், அகல்யாபாயை தனது மருமகளாக்கிக் கொள்ள முடிவு செய்தார்.
அந்த சமயத்தில் முகலாயஆட்சி இந்தியாவில் மறையத் துவங்கியிருந்தது. அந்த தருணத்தில் பல்காராவ் கோல்கரின் மகனும், அகல்யாபாயின் கணவருமான காந்தே ராவ் கோல்கர் திடீரென மரணமடைந்தார். இதனால் அரச பதவி காலியானது. அகல்யாபாய் விதவையானார். இந்தச்சூழலில் அவரே பொறுப்புகளை ஏற்றுக் கொண்டு அரசு நிர்வாகம் செய்ய துவங்கினார். இந்த சமயத்தில் பிரிட்டிஸார் தனது நாட்டை கைப்பற்றுவதற்கு அகல்யாபாய் அனுமதிக்கவில்லை.
மகாராணி துர்காவதிக்குப் பிறகு இந்த அரசின் பொறுப்புகளை ஏற்ற இரண்டாவது ராணி அகால்யாபாய் என்பதால் அவருக்கு பெரும் செல்வாக்கு ஏற்பட்டது. அவரது ஆட்சி நல்லாட்சியாக அமைந்தது. கல்கத்தாவில் துவங்கி பனாரஸ் வரையிலும் சிறந்த சாலையை உருவாக்கியவர் ராணி அகல்யாபாய். அன்னபூர்னா கோயில் என்ற ஆலயத்தையும் அவர் உருவாக்கினார். தனது 60வது வயதில் காலமானார்.
Ahilyabai was the first woman ruler who resisted the British power till her death. She was born in 1725 at Pathradi in Maharashtra. Her father Mankoji Scindhia was a farmer. Ahilyabai’s physical appearance was not very attractive. However, maharaja Malharrao Holkar himself decided to make her his daughter-in-law.
At that time Mughal rule in India was on the wane. In the meantime, Khanderao Holkar, son of Malharrao Holkar, died. The throne became vacant. Ahilyabai, the queen of Khanderao, became a widow. She took over the reigns and started managing the affairs of the state smoothly. She did not allow the British to capture her kingdom.
Her rule and her name was significant because she was the second queen after Durgavati to take over the responsibities of the kingdom’s administration. Queen Ahilyabai got the firm road constructed from Calcutta to Benaras and also built the ‘Annapoorna Temple’. She died at the age of sixty.
